It’s that time of the year again, where utterly excessive food consumption becomes a normality and people no longer raise an eyebrow when you reach for an alcoholic tipple before 5pm. Christmas creeps up on us every year, and with it comes a flurry of traditions and customs, some of which are downright strange if you remove yourself from the festive bubble just for a moment.
For example, the reasons why it becomes completely normal to kiss someone while stood underneath mistletoe are bewilderingly unclear; a twisting history with mentions of Druidic Mythology and evil spirits. The reality however, could be as simple as a drunken Uncle stumbling across a genius way to mask his creepiness many years ago.
One such tradition which most can relate to is the Advent Calendar, with fond childhood memories of ceremonially opening tiny cardboard doors each morning to indulge in a chocolate treat before 9am – something which parents would find preposterous at any other time of the year. Like many Christmas related festivities they often fade away with age, but that’s no longer the case in this instance. It is our pleasure to point you in the direction of probably the best advent calendar to ever cross our paths: The Whiskey Advent Calendar.
The execution is simple but flawless, behind each of the 24 doors is a different dram of whiskey. For those of you unaccustomed to the Scottish measurement, the wax sealed drams contains 3cl, which is touch over a single shot and the perfect amount for an evening tipple.
The calendar itself will set you back £150 or around $188, which understandably may seem steep for an advent calendar. Festivities aside, it’s a fantastic way to broaden your whisky horizons and discover a new drink you wouldn’t otherwise reach for. The whisky’s themselves range from the recognisable and affordable, to the exclusive and rare, with some costing up to £350 a bottle.
It’s the ultimate way to countdown to Christmas, recapturing that aforementioned childhood excitement in a way that can’t be rivalled. We found ourselves pondering during the day about what delight awaited us behind that tiny cardboard door.
If whisky really isn’t your thing, there’s a range of other options available including:
At the time of posting we’re already early on into December, but due to the points highlighted above there’s no reason why you should abide to these unwritten advent calendar rules. It’s a unique and fun way to douse your palate with a different liquor everyday, and discover your new favourite drink.
